Yukon Bus Depot Flood Mitigation Project

Yukon Avenue Bus Depot, Staten Island, NY
Metropolitan Transportation Authority โ€“ New York City Transit (MTA/NYCT)
1m

Project Overview

The Yukon Bus Depot Flood Mitigation project focused on improving facility resilience against storm surge and flooding by installing engineered flood protection systems, structural reinforcements, and upgraded drainage infrastructure. Work was performed within an active transit operations facility, requiring strict coordination with depot operations, security teams, and ongoing bus service activities. The project enhanced life-safety systems, reduced flood risk to critical mechanical spaces, and strengthened the building envelope to meet updated design flood elevation requirements.

Engineer/Designer: Arcadis of New York, Inc.

Key Challenges

  • Construction within a fully operational MTA bus depot, requiring phased work and continuous coordination to minimize disruption to daily transit operations. (General Scope notes โ€“ page 3)
  • Installation of flood doors, panels, and drainage infrastructure while maintaining safe access and emergency egress routes. (Flood egress layout โ€“ page 5)
  • Integration of new civil, structural, electrical, and mechanical flood mitigation systems into existing facility conditions.
  • Complex underground utility coordination, excavation, and dewatering in tight urban infrastructure environments. (Utility notes โ€“ page 10)

Detailed Scope of Work

  • Provided all labor, materials, supervision, permits, inspections, and coordination required for the flood mitigation retrofit project. (General scope notes โ€“ page 3)
  • Installed engineered flood doors, flood panels, and barrier systems at openings, vents, and louvers below the design flood elevation. (Architectural scope โ€“ page 3)
  • Replaced existing pedestrian doors with flood-rated assemblies including new hardware, anchors, and protective finishes. (Civil notes โ€“ page 3)
  • Performed structural reinforcement of existing CMU walls including saw-cutting cells, installing reinforcement, and grout placement. (Structural scope โ€“ page 3)
  • Installed sump pumps, check valves, French drains, and upgraded drainage systems to control interior flooding and groundwater intrusion. (Drainage plans โ€“ page 12 & details โ€“ page 13)
  • Completed excavation, utility protection, temporary supports, and duct bank installation while maintaining existing transit infrastructure. (Utility general notes โ€“ page 10)
  • Installed electrical power connections and receptacles for new pump systems and flood control equipment. (Electrical notes โ€“ page 3)
  • Performed architectural finishing work including coatings, painting of galvanized steel components, and restoration of affected building surfaces. (Architectural notes โ€“ page 3)
  • Maintained daily cleanup, safety protection, and phased sequencing to ensure continuous facility operation and secure work zones. (General notes โ€“ page 4)
  • Completed inspections, testing, closeout documentation, and final turnover to the MTA.
