Project Overview

The Chempack Room Redesign project at Metropolitan Hospital involved interior structural, architectural, mechanical, and electrical upgrades supporting emergency preparedness infrastructure as part of a FEMA flood resiliency initiative. Working as a subcontractor under Gilbane Building Company, our team performed specialized construction within an active hospital environment requiring strict safety coordination, phased sequencing, and integration with ongoing facility operations.

Key Challenges

  • Construction within an operational hospital requiring infection control procedures and continuous coordination with hospital staff.
  • Structural modifications including removal of existing garage openings and installation of reinforced CMU wall assemblies.
  • Integration of new HVAC systems, electrical infrastructure, and emergency preparedness equipment within confined interior spaces.
  • Maintaining safety, access, and emergency egress throughout the construction process.

Detailed Scope of Work

  • Interior demolition including removal of doors, frames, partitions, ramps, and existing finishes to prepare for new construction.
  • Construction of reinforced CMU walls, gypsum board partitions, hollow metal frames, and masonry infill panels.
  • Installation of new concrete ramp and structural modifications including lintels and reinforcement.
  • HVAC system upgrades including AC units, refrigerant piping, condensate systems, and ventilation improvements.
  • Electrical upgrades including emergency panel installation, power distribution, and connections for fire suppression equipment.
  • Installation of security screens, lighting adjustments, and coordination with fire protection and emergency systems.
  • Final inspections, testing, closeout documentation, and turnover completed in accordance with project specifications and resiliency program requirements.
